Description

What does "open box" mean?

Open-box products are returned products with opened or damaged packaging, but fully checked from a technical point of view and completely functional. They come with the same warranty as new products.

The Shelly 1 Gen4 is a single-channel smart relay with dry (potential-free) contacts, intended for controlling lights and electrical appliances. It offers multi-protocol connectivity - Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Bluetooth and Matter - with the protocol chosen directly by the user, depending on the network in the home.

The dry contacts allow switching of circuits with voltages different from the device's supply voltage, making it suitable both for 110-240V AC installations and for low-voltage 12V or 24-48V DC circuits. It supports a maximum current of 16A on resistive loads and can be used as a trigger for industrial contactors.

The device integrates advanced scripting, schedules, scenes, local actions and support for KNXnet/IP, HTTPS, MQTTS and WebSockets. The internal temperature sensor provides overheating protection, and the compact dimensions allow installation in standard wall boxes or in electrical panels.

In practice, the Shelly 1 Gen4 is frequently used to automate a garage door or an electric gate, through its dry contacts compatible with existing remote controls, but also to control an electric water heater, an irrigation pump or an underfloor heating system, in combination with a Shelly BLU H&T sensor.

Note: no additional hub is needed to operate via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (used only for inclusion and as a gateway) or Matter. If you choose Zigbee connectivity, however, a compatible Zigbee hub or coordinator is required (for example a Home Assistant integration), according to Shelly's official specifications for Gen4 devices.

Practical use cases

  • Mounted behind a conventional wall switch, it turns a room's lighting into a circuit controlled from the app, by voice command or automatically, without replacing the existing switch.
  • Installed on the circuit of a recirculation pump or an electric water heater, it allows remote switching on/off and scheduling of operating hours to save energy.
  • Integrated into a home automation system, it can automatically switch off sockets or lighting when the whole family leaves home, based on geolocation from the app.
  • Used in an electrical panel to control outdoor lighting, it can be scheduled to switch on automatically at sunset and switch off in the morning.
